Another great week in Ms. Peck's classroom. It is a bittersweet week as we welcome a new student, Annie, but say a sad goodbye to Michael. We have changed desk arrangements AGAIN in order to promote productivity and cut down on chatter in the classroom. As a class we had to revisit our classroom "norms" but it feels like we're heading back in the right direction. In Math Unit 3 has begun and the focus has been on multiplication. Within this unit there has been heavy emphasis on the vocabulary. Students need to know and understand the meanings of factor, product, factor pair, multiples, composite and prime numbers. If you have child who is having trouble with their math facts there are resources such as mathplayground.com on the "website" page that are good for fact practice. We also took our October "timed test" for multiplication facts. I am happy to say that almost all students showed growth. In Writer's Workshop We revised our new personal narratives to write bold beginnings and memorable endings. We continue to find ways to make our personal narratives more exciting by adding precise words (or fancy words as I call them) and descriptive adjectives. Today, we began typing our final drafts. Next week, we will finish our rough drafts and move on to brainstorming a NEW personal narrative. In Reader's Workshop We completed last week's work with finishing up our character trait acrostics, and learned about how to "chunk" unfamiliar words. We then shifted gears and took the time to read informational text. We looked at the differences between non-fiction and fiction text and talked about the reason why we read certain texts. We built upon this idea by then reading from our social studies textbooks and learning strategies for summarizing the important ideas. In Science We have been observing our grass seed that we planted in perlite and soil. We had a discussion about variables and appropriate amounts of water to add, as some of our experiments are not going "as planned". In Social Studies Discussion of groups of people and their contributions have been the topic of the week. We wrote "remixed" lyrics to This Land is Your Land based upon the different contributions and settlements of of the American Indians, Latinos, Asian Americans and African Americans. Have a great weekend! -Ms. Peck |
