Another busy week has wrapped up in room 114. All of the students looked wonderful for picture day!
This week:
In Math: We began Unit 2, which is about numbers and data collection. We have noticed how numbers are all around us, and have learned a lot about place value. Today, we had a Checking Progress.

Writing: We have been continuing working on our Personal Narrative Unit. We are learning strategies we can use in our writing that make our writing more enjoyable to read. We have worked this week on story archs, taking small portions of our writing and adding more detail, writing from "inside" the story, and writing with "inner talk". Ask your child about some of these things ;)
Reading: We are in the beginning stages of getting our reading response journals started. We have been looking at what makes a good reading response letter, and have been stickie noting passages within our books that are "reading response worthy".
Social Studies: We are beginning our unit learning about the different regions of the United States. We had discussions about how/why states might be grouped together and the students were introduced to the five regions ( Midwest, West, Southwest, Southeast, Northeast). We will begin diving in deeper to a specific region next week.
Science: Worms! Worms! Worms! I'm sure that is all you are going to hear about today when you talk with your child. We learned more about decomposition and scavengers at the beginning of the week, specifically looking at two types of beetles (burying beetle and the dung beetle).

Don't worry, they all washed their hands! :)
We also have begun talking a lot about bullying. More specifically; what it is, how its different from teasing and conflict, and what to do if you're experiencing it. We have created Bully Posters that will be laminated and put in the hallways for other students to learn from.
