I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving! Thank you to all of you that were able to get flash drives, they are definitely going to save time and come in handy!
As a means to try to promote peer relationships and strengthen our classrooms culture, towards the end of the week you will see a weekly reflection coming home. This reflection is to help students set goals for themselves by recognizing their strengths and “work-ons” of the week. We will be brainstorming reasons that relate to why a week could be positive and negative, (both academically and behaviorally) with the understanding that we ALL have things we can improve on. Accompanied by this, I will be going over one life skill a week and we will set a goal as a class related to that life skill. I believe as we do this, students will become more deliberate and understanding of how their actions affect the classroom as a whole. This will be something that is sent home on Friday, with my feedback as well. Students are to return them to school signed on Monday as they will be put in their "data binders".
Quick Info:
- December reading calendars are going home today and November reading calendars are due. Please make sure to initial the days that your child read.
- The book fair is this week and on Wednesday, December 3rd from 11:20 - 11:40pm we will be previewing the book fair. During this time students can make a “wish list” of books that they would like to buy. On Thursday, December 4th we will return to the book fair from 9:20-9:40 am where we will be able to buy books. The book fair will also be open after school both days from 3:45- 6:30. If your child is going to purchase books please send any money in an envelope with your child’s name on it.
- Friday, December 5th is Spirit day: Twin Day.
- Friday, December 5th is also bagel day.
Math: Right before break we took our Unit 4 Math Test. Today we self assessed our scores and corrected the problems that we got incorrect. We will begin a Unit 5 tomorrow and will be building upon our knowledge of multiplication by extending our multiplication facts, touching upon the distributive property playing multiplication wrestling, estimating sums, and estimating products.
Writing: This week we are going to be in our final stages of publishing our personal narratives. Today we looked at “reading punctuation” by editing a part of Wonder. We then took what we knew about reading punctuation and revised our writing “listening” for punctuation. Within the week we are going to be breaking our writing down into pages, finishing illustrations and using what we learned in reader’s workshop to make our own personal narratives “fun” to read.
Reading: Today we focused on why we enjoy reading certain personal narratives over others. As we are beginning to publish our own personal narratives, it is important for students to see the connection between what they are reading and what they are writing. We will focus a tiny bit more on fluency and then return to comprehension of fiction and non-fiction passages. Book clubs will slowly be forming, and we will be using all of the reading strategies we have learned so far to strength our interaction with books.
Science: This week we will be summing up our Nature’s Recyclers unit. We will continue to make observations on our bread mold experiment and revisit the different organisms that aid in decomposition. This week at library I’m going to ask students to get a non-fiction book about a science topic they would be interested in. We will be doing more with this book next week.
Social Studies: This week we will be finishing up the northeast region looking at population density and life in the northeast region.
