Thank you parents and King PTO for a wonderful teacher appreciation week, I appreciate how supportive you all have been this year.
After a long two weeks of testing we are finally finished with the M-STEP, once again I was very impressed with how flexible the students were and their ability to persevere through the long duration of these tests.
- Looking ahead, we DO still have to take the NWEA and SRI, if all goes as planned it looks like we will be taking the NWEA May 18th and May 20th, (unless our wind tunnel field trip is postponed because of rain, as May 20th is our rain day make up). Due to scheduling complications we are still trying to sort out the timing of the SRI
but as soon as I’m aware of what time I will keep you updated.
THIS WEEK:
- We will be going on the Water Tour Field trip this Thursday (May 14th). This will be an all day field trip that goes from 9:00-2:00pm. Students WILL have to bring a packed lunch for the trip. We will be starting in Dexter and visiting “watery” stops along the way.
- Next week May 19th, we will be going on the Wind Tunnel Field trip. This will be another all day field trip where a packed lunch must be provided as well.

What we've been up to Looking Ahead
Math: We are almost finished with Unit 11. We have been discussing weight and it’s measurement in grams and ounces. We have also been discussing geometric solids and their properties. We have been discussing volume and learned how to find the volume of a rectangular prism. Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop: We have finished up our poetry unit and have compiled our poetry anthologies. Once they are bound they will be sent home (hopefully by the end of the week) , I think you all will be impressed with the amount of work the majority of the class has put into these and their demonstration of the different elements of poetry. Due to the amount of testing, we’ve been reading for enjoyment this week. We also began our biography by choosing a person that we would be interested in doing research on. Social Studies We have been creating board games that demonstrate our knowledge of our tour of the west. The class has been extremely eager and has worked so hard to plan, organize, and create a board game. I have been extremely impressed with the creativity and understandings reflected in these games. Science With the testing going on, it has given us the opportunity to get through a lot of fun experiments in science. We have been conducting investigations to learn more about phase changes and what causes them. We also have been conducting experiments involving the factors that affect evaporation and touching upon condensation. We finished off our matter unit discussing the properties of mixtures and solutions. | We will be finishing up Unit 11 this week discussing capacity and touching upon subtracting negative numbers. We will then review and take the Unit 11 test Thursday of this week. Word Study: You might notice word study changing a little bit! Last Thursday, the majority of students checked out books or found a biography on a person that they would be interested in researching. We will begin discussing the different elements of biographies and students will be choosing a person in their own life that they would like to interview and write a biography on. We will be starting to focus on the Midwest region and more specifically the history of Michigan as it relates to our field trip in June. We are going to start our final unit Watery Earth. This week we will begin exploring our watery earth with our Water Tour Field trip. |
